                   By 240000 hectare area under growth, Iran is the second highest producer of date palm and fifth in production (4.5 t/h)in the world.Medjool, is one of the best varieties according to its quality and shape, which, each tree has potential to produce 80 kg approximately. The production of this plant by off-shots has certain limitation as the number of off-shots is normally less and the chance of pathogens and pest expansion are high in this way.Therefore, micropropagation of date palm can be a suitable alternative method for production of this plant.Also, its effect to the agricultural economy by creating job opportunities in this field and export is significant.

 

ABRII results (founding):

- Date palm (Medjool V.) in vitro proliferation and production, by using somatic embryogenesis method.

- Introducing a standard protocol for Date palm (Medjool V.) in vitro proliferation, and sign the official agreement for commercial production by this method.

Economic benefits (in case of commercialization):

- Saving foreign currencies

- Increasing the production by substitution of 20% of growth area with the Medjool variety up to 360000 ton.

- Creating job opportunities in this field.
